Description
This introductory course in Digital Literary Studies explores how digital humanities and computational methods inform and transform the study of literature. Focusing on print and digital works by Asian American and multiethnic authors, students will engage in digital approaches such as text mining, digital mapping, and network analysis. We will also consider the evolving landscape of literary production through interactive and electronic literature. No prior technical experience is required.
Major assignments include a group case study presentation, in which students analyze existing digital literary studies projects, and a sequence of three mini-digital humanities projects with short analysis papers. These projects introduce students to core DH tools and methods while encouraging them to critically evaluate how digital approaches generate insights and limitations in the study of literature. Through this work, students will gain both practical skills in digital methods and a deeper understanding of the interpretive practices that define literary studies in the humanities today.
